I strolled through the barn, my boots thudding against the pavement. Stopping at Whisper's stall, I clucked my tongue gently, awaking her from her deep sleep. She yawned and snorted, walking over to the stall door. She stuck her head over the door and nudged my palm, wanting a treat.
"No girly, don't have one right now," I commented, smiling. The white mare shook her mane and waited patiently for me to go grab a groom bucket and begin currying her coat. As I groomed her coat, I spoke to her gently, she flicked an ear back at me, listening intently. She flicked her tail and began to doze off, content with me brushing her.
I awoke her by asking her to bring up her hoof. She snorted and tried to kick out. Whisper hated her hooves being picked. I grasped hold of her hoof gently and clutched it in my hand while scraping and brushing mud off her hooves with my other hand.
At last, she was done and I went outside, sweating from the heat. I sat on the barn bench and waited for the first student to come. I had to take Kerrigan's place today, for she was sick. So I was stuck teaching every student today. I shrugged and turned on the battery powered fan outside, cooling myself off. I had heard that there was a new student coming today, but I wasn't sure if it was a boy or a girl, all I knew was that he or she was my age and just learning to ride.
